Everest Base Camp Trekking without Lukla flight Highlights

Everest base camp trekking without flying to Lukla is 18 days program including arrival and departure days. Drive with jeep to Salleri further to Thandanda and trek to main trekking route of EBC (Phakding) through unexplored section of Knumbu region. Program skip Lukla airport flight which is most scary flight and airport in the world.

The main trekking trail of Khumbu region was not touched with ground transportation before. Now there are various route which touch with gravel road and trekking through this route is still not popular. One of the short and comfortable driving route to Everest region is via Salleri. 15 days trekking and driving ,1 days rest in Kathmandu after long days trekking makes this plan total 16 days. Including your arrival in Kathmandu and departure day from Kathmandu makes total program 18 days. 6 days of trekking and driving is in unexplored low land region of Khumbu where you can expect tourist standard basic accommodations and locally prepared foods. Salleri, Nunthala, Chutok, Paiya and to Phakding. Cost of Lukla flight covers your transportation from Kathmandu to Salleri and 6 more days trekking on the region.

Driving and Trekking to Everest Base Camp

8 hours driving road to Salleri from Kathmandu is mixed of well paved and gravel. We will provide you comfortable 4wheel jeep. Another driving for 6 hour is from Salleri to Thandanda which we take local jeep and driving road is entirely rough. Unique trekking trail from last point of jeep station to Phakding can expect beautiful landscape with drop of Himalayan views. Typical Sherpa and Rai communities are well settled in this region. Exploring their simple life style, their daily works and their unique cultures are feels different than regular trekking route of Everest. It also help to make your body fit in acclimatization before reaching Phakding and Namche which are trekking towns more than 2600 miters altitude. Two days of acclimatization (Namche and Dingboche) helps to fill power in your body reaching easily Everest Base Camp (5364m) and climb Kalapathar (5,545m). Trekking return same way back to Phakding than to Thandanda. Drive back to Kathmandu again same way by comfortable jeep. You will not reach Lukla airport. Trekking program finished without flying Lukla.

Drive to trekking starting point and fly back after trekking

Due to the road condition, drive till the trekking point is not easy. The first day of the driving is about 11 hours but the kilometer is only 267. The second day drive takes another 6 hours to reach Thandanda or further to Paiya. As per our experience, many trekkers who booked and planned for both the way driving, intend to change coming back Kathmandu by Lukla flight at the end of trek. So that you can plan this adventure one way driving and another way flying. It is also the good opportunity to explore foothills of Everest base camp first. Which is also the good way to acclimatization. Instead of driving same way back to Kathmandu, take flight back from Lukla airport. The way of driving in and flying out reduce one day in the trekking itinerary.

    Client Reviews

    • We had an incredible experience with Nepal Highland Treks.

Everything was organised and communicated well in advance by Hemanta, so we felt very prepared to arrive in Kathmandu and begin the trek a couple of days later. The inclusion of a few nights in a hotel (with delicious breakfasts included!) was a real bonus, as it made the arrival in Kathmandu very seamless. We took the driving option at the to the start of the Everest Base Camp trek, which was a great experience as we got to see some more remote areas. The trek itself was wonderful, and our guide Ranjit was brilliant - he had lots of knowledge about the different areas we were in, the mountains, and took care of all the accommodation and food at the tea houses. The trek was well-paced, with Ranjit and our awesome porters providing the necessary support, as well as lot of laughs and good times. We ended up taking the flight out of Lukla instead of driving out, which Hemanta and Ranjit organised for us.

We highly recommend Nepal Highland Treks - it provided an amazing experience for us, with many small touches that really made it a stand-out.
