Rara Lake is stunning deep lake with blue and changing color hourly is the best part to see in remote Nepal. Day 01: Kathmandu to Kohalpur (11 Hours)
Kathmandu to Kohalpur is 11 hours comfortable drive. There are many hotels around the town as per your budget category. Overnight at Kohalpur.
Day 02: Drive Kohalpur to Manma, headquarter of Kalikot district
Start driving from early in the morning. Manma to Sukhet is around 2.5 HRS drive which is around 100 KM. And Surkhet to Manma, Kalikot is around 150 KM which take a full day to reach there. If we skip few places than overall the road condition is quite good. This is one the scenic drive of your journey where you will be travelling through SAL forest.
Day 03: Manma to Rara Lake via Sija and Nagma
Start driving from early in the morning. It is only around 20 min drive from Nagma and road starts rough non paved till Rara Lake. Now you will be travelling by the age of Karnali river for 4 hrs and than through the village and Sallaha forest. After 20 min drive from Talcha Airport one small cottage can be see where you need to park your vehicle and walk for 30 min to reach lake. For seeing lake this is enough but if you want to stay in the bank of lake and enjoy the spectacular view of lake than you need to walk approx 1.5 hrs by the edge of lake and you will reach the hotel which lies in the bank of Lake. You also have option to fix tent at the bank of Lake.
Day 4 : Full day Exploring the Lake
Early morning breakfast and taking boat to explore the lake is a wise idea. It cost only Rs 500 per person for the long distance sightseeing by boat. In the day time you can hike upto the hill where you can see the best view of the lake. Hiking to Murma top is exellant experience to view Rara Lake, Mountains and sorrounding hills of far western Nepal. On your on the way back, visit Murma village. Only one typical local village nearby the Lake.
Day 5: Rara Lake to Manma
Return to Manma, Kalikot by the same route as you went rara the day before yesterday. Overnight in Manma, Kalikot.
Day 6: Manma to Kohalupur/Surkhet
Start you day early in the morning where you can find many places in the way to have tea rest. If you start you day at 6 AM than you can easily reach Kohalpur on the same day otherwise you will be staying in Surkeht.
Day 7: Kohalpur to Kathmandu
It is same way back to Kathmadnu. Option to drop you to Pokhara.
Best time to visit Rara Lake
Jeep tour to Rara Lake is best in dry season. Road from Nagma to Rara Lake is entirly rough. Once raining season starts, road from there may block. The best visiting time to the lake is September to November and April to May. From December to February, the temperatures go low below the freezing point, and heavy snowfall may occur up to one meter that cause blocking the way to the lake. April to June is warm in this region.

Rara Lake lies at an altitude of 2,990 m (9,810 ft) above sea level, has a water surface of 10.8 km2 (4.2 sq mi), a maximum depth of 167 m (548 ft), is 5.1 km (3.2 mi) long and 2.7 km (1.7 mi) wide. It drains into the Mugu Karnali River via the Nijar River. Its water quality is characterized by high pH, conductivity and total hardness. It has been classified as oligotrophic as it is slightly polluted. The lake holds three endemic fish species Nepalese snowtrout (Schizothorax macrophthalmus), (S. nepalensis) and the Rara snowtrout (S. raraensis) and one endemic frog, Rara Lake frog (Nanorana rarica). Winter visitor water birds such as gadwall (Anas strepera), mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), northern shoveler (Anas clypeata), common teal (Anas crecca), tufted duck (Aythya fuligula), common golden eye (Bucephala clangula), common merganser (Mergus merganser), common coot (Fulica atra), and solitary snipe (Gallinago solitaria) reside and rest at this lake.
