The upper Mustang area is a rain shadow area of Nepal and direct touch with the Tibetan plateau. It is the hidden world of the old Buddhist kingdom. The lifestyle of the people, their language, and cultures are closely tied with Tibet, this is the region of Upper Mustang also called small Tibet in Nepal. Foreigners are only allowed from 1992 in this region, before this it was totally restricted to other than Nepalese. The area is still controlled and needs a special permit from the Nepal government. The gateway of Upper Mustang is Kagbeni village. It touches the lower Mustang and Annapurna region too. Tiny Jomsom Airport is the only airport in this area.
